Windows Protected Print Mode

This page applies to:

PaperCut offers introductory support for Windows Protected Print Mode (WPP) Mode.

PaperCut’s introductory support for WPP is available with the following minimum versions:
PaperCut MF: version 24.1
Print Deploy: version 1.9.2790 (Nov 26, 2024)
Client: Windows version 1833

This initial phase introduces simple printing functionality for organizations that use WPP-enabled Windows devices, and ensures secure and seamless printing, even those that are non-IPP-compatible.

This is a beta feature and will evolve over time, so we encourage anyone interested in keeping up to date with the latest developments to sign up for the Percolator program .

What is Windows Protected Print Mode?

Microsoft’s WPP is a security-focused feature that enables driverless printing using the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP). It eliminates using traditional printer drivers, which enhances security and reduces potential vulnerabilities - an important advancement for modern print environments.

However, transitioning to WPP can present challenges for organizations with older or non-IPP-compatible printers.

For a comprehensive overview of WPP, its timeline, and how your organization can prepare for (and benefit from) this powerful security feature, take a look at The complete guide to Windows Protected Print Mode .

What’s currently available in PaperCut NG/MF for WPP

For customers with WPP-enabled computers, PaperCut NG/MF currently supports printing via Mobility Print queues that are deployed by Print Deploy, enabling printing to all printers, even those that non-IPP-compatible.

Unlike mobility queues, server queues and direct queues can’t be not adapted to be WPP compatible and so will not appear in WPP enabled systems.

Mobility Print

Mobility Print delivers network print services for iOS, Windows, macOS, Android, and ChromeOS devices across mixed fleet environments.

It enables all end-user clients (for example, iPhones, Chromebooks, Android phones, and laptops) that are not managed by your organization to securely print to any printer in your network. It also works with managed Chromebooks.

You can install Mobility Print on your print server without impacting current users. There is no additional cost to use Mobility Print.

Print Deploy is a print queue deployment tool that gets the right printer drivers and print queues to the right person in the right location, effectively.

Print Deploy is included as part of PaperCut NG/MF. For details, check out What is Print Deploy and take a look around the Print Deploy manual.

Finishing options

PaperCut’s beta support release includes simple finishing options:

  • paper size selection
  • copy count
  • duplex (two-sided/single-sided) printing
  • color or grayscale printing

What’s not included yet

While this release supports simple print functions for PaperCut NG/MF, it doesn’t yet support advanced finishing options, such as stapling, binding, hole-punching, and tray selection.

Future releases will expand support for PaperCut Hive customers and include the additional functionality for advanced finishing features.

Looking ahead

We’re continuously working to enhance our WPP support, with plans to introduce advanced finishing options and other features in future releases.
