A card reader can allow users to authenticate at an MFD (Multifunction Device) by tapping an access card, badge, or other token. They replace or supplement PIN codes and usernames/passwords for authentication.
Card readers help admins provide convenient copier access in secure environments since users can log in with a quick tap of their ID badge.

Troubleshooting card reader problems
If a card reader isn’t working or not working properly, try the following.
- Power-cycle the card reader. Try unplugging it and plugging it back in.
- Verify the embedded app version and card reader compatibility. Are you using the correct version for your setup? Your authorized PaperCut Partner can help determine if your card reader model is supported for the specific MFD.
- Check the card reader firmware. Ensure the card reader is using its manufacturer’s recommended firmware version.
- Test on a PC. Connect the card reader to a desktop computer, open a text file, and swipe the card. Did the correct card number appear in the text file? If not, the card reader might not be configured for keyboard emulation. The exact steps will depend on the brand and model of card reader. Work with your authorized PaperCut Partner to confirm the card reader is configured correctly.
