Plan and get started with PaperCut Hive and Pocket

This page applies to:

1. Are you ready?

Take a look through the product pages for PaperCut Pocket or PaperCut Hive to get an idea of what each product can do. There’s also a handy feature comparison of PaperCut’s products, including PaperCut Pocket, PaperCut Hive, and PaperCut NG/MF, over on the PaperCut product feature comparison page.

Check your organization meets the system requirements . Here you will find important information regarding supported operating systems, mobile devices, and multifunction devices (MFDs), as well as networking information.

2. Get access

When you’re ready to get up and running, there are two paths you can take depending on the product you’re using:

  • PaperCut Pocket - use the Start Free Trial button to try it out!
  • PaperCut Hive - use the How To Buy button, which helps us to put you in touch with the right partner in your local region.

3. Set up your account

If you chose PaperCut Pocket, you’ll be able to sign up straight after clicking the Start Free Trial button. If you’ve applied for access to PaperCut Hive, you’ll get an email to let you know that you can sign up.

This is the bit where you create your PaperCut Pocket or PaperCut Hive account and password.

  • PaperCut Pocket Sign Up - enter your name, work email, and set up a password. You’ll then need to verify your email address, after which you’ll be able to log in to PaperCut Pocket.
  • PaperCut Hive Sign Up - enter your name, work email, and set up a password. If you’re on the approved list, you’ll then be able to log into PaperCut Hive.

4. Set up your organization

At this point you’re eager to get your printers set up, get your users added, and start printing. You’re not left alone though - the admin console (what you see after logging in) has plenty of guidance, and the manual is always here to help. To start with, you’ll need to follow the onboarding guidance in the admin console and:

  • download the PaperCut Pocket or PaperCut Hive System Client software
  • discover your organization’s printers
  • add your first user and get an email invite to finish your onboarding
  • download and install the PaperCut Pocket or PaperCut Hive User Client
  • for PaperCut Pocket: install the mobile app from the email invite (optional for PaperCut Hive)
  • send your first print job to a printer.

What then?

By this point, you’ll have explored the admin console, added yourself as a user (so you’ve experienced the onboarding steps first hand!), and successfully sent your first print job.

You know your users and your environment far better than us, but we do have a few recommendations on what to do next. You can also go freestyle here!

Check out the rest of the manual

Have a skim through the other pages in the PaperCut Hive and Pocket manual . Maybe start with Manage your print environment and Configure features .

Customize your print environment

Get comfortable with the system and customize it to what is best for your organization:

Customize your new user experience

Customize your new user experience for people at your organization. Check out the options for onboarding users , including the invite options, authentication, and User Portal options.

Invite your users to print using PaperCut Hive or Pocket

Send out your invitations or, if you’ve enabled the User Portal, share your organization’s login link. Your users are waiting for this easier way to print!

  • Think about rolling out the new printing system to a subset of trial users first.
  • Put posters up in common areas, or use internal communications to talk about the change and positive things that users will be able to do - like releasing their print job from any printer, or being able to change the number of copies or print settings after sending a document to the printer!
  • Check in with the trial users to see how things went and find out what improvements you can make before rolling out to the rest of your organization.

Sit back and enjoy easy printing and cloud print management.
