A super node is offline

This page applies to:

‘Help! I’m an administrator, I set up an edge node and promoted it to be a super node.  Why is it now showing me an error?!

Could not connect to Super Node tips.

You saw this error on your Edge Mesh page:
“Could not communicate to at least one of your super nodes. They are not that super! Click here for troubleshooting tips.” and landed here.

A quick refresher - what are super nodes?

Basically, super nodes help improve the reliability of the local Edge Mesh. They perform the same roles as standard node, but just work harder! A super node is optional but recommended on networks with 20 or more printers.

If there's a problem with a super node, don’t worry. Other super nodes or standard nodes are always ready to automatically step in to repair the Edge Mesh and keep printing working.

To learn more about the different types of edge nodes, see Managing your Edge Mesh nodes.

Find the super node(s) that aren't working and fix them

Example of a super node

If you notice that a super node is ‘down,’ it won't be included in any printing workflow. Some reasons it might have gone down:

  • The computer might have turned off due to an update.
  • The computer accidentally shut down.

Find out the reason and fix it. After that, the edge node will report back to PaperCut Hive or Pocket explaining it’s up and running.

Promote other reliable edge nodes to be super nodes

When one or more super nodes are failing, strengthen the Edge Mesh by finding one or more other reliable edge nodes and promoting them to be super nodes. An always-on system or virtual machine makes a great super node.

  1. Go to the Edge Mesh page.
  2. In the list of edge nodes, go to the one that you think is most reliable.
  3. On the right, point on the 3-dot menu, then click Promote. Your selected edge node becomes a super node.
