Card/ID Number Self-Association at the MFD

This page applies to:

Card self-association allows a user to associate their swipe card with their PaperCut account without needing any administrator assistance.

When a user swipes a new card at the card reader on a copier, they are taken to a screen to enter their username and password. If they enter their username and password correctly, then the card is linked with their account. On subsequent card swipes, the user will be logged straight in as their card is now associated.

To enable this Card/ID Number self-association:

  1. Log in to the PaperCut admin interface.

  2. Choose Devices, then select a device to manage.

  3. Scroll down to Access Methods check the box next to Swipe Card, then check the new box Enable self-association with existing user accounts.

  4. (Optional) To ensure that users self-associated Card/ID Numbers are not overwritten during the next User/Group Sync, go to Options > User/Group Sync. Then set Primary number and/or Secondary ID number to Do not sync.

Self-associate cards with the Secondary Card/ID Number

Users may have up to two Card/ID Numbers associated with their account from within the PaperCut admin interface.

By default, when a swipe card is used and self-association is enabled, the number read from the card is created in the Primary Card/Identity Numbers field. In some situations, this might not be preferable. For example, you might want to sync the Primary field with Active Directory and have any self-associated card numbers go into the Secondary Card/Identity Numbers field instead.

Follow these steps to change which field will be populated when a user self-associates their Card/ID Number at a device:

  1. Log in to PaperCut admin interface.
  2. Go to Options and select the Config Editor (Advanced) action from the left set of Action links.
  3. Use the Quick find: to locate the key:
    ext-device.card-self-association.use-secondary-card-number
  4. Change the value to Y (yes) and press the Update button.

This means any cards self-associated to a user will automatically use the secondary card number field rather than the primary.

If you want to restore the default setting simply set the config key to N and hit Update.

Device-level configuration

The use of the secondary ID field can also be configured per device. To change the card number field for a particular device:

  1. Log in to the PaperCut admin interface.
  2. Navigate to Devices and select a device to configure.
  3. Select the Advanced Config tab for the device and search for the key:
    ext-device.card-self-association.use-secondary-card-number
  4. Change the value to Y (yes) and press the Update button.

Alternatively, the device can be configured to use the primary card number field with the value N, or default to the global setting by changing the value to GLOBAL.

If the key does not exist, you can create it via the Add new section. Provide the name, value of Y (yes) and select Add.
