Scan to Home Folder

THE PAGE APPLIES TO:

“Help! I’m a PaperCut MF administrator, and I’m wanting to set up a Scan Action that will scan files directly into a user’s Home Folder. How can I configure this in PaperCut?”

What is a Home Folder?

Home Folder / Home Directory is a user attribute in Windows Active Directory and other user directories like LDAP. Each user has a folder hosted on a network share that only they themselves have access to. It’s possible to configure PaperCut MF to scan files directly to user’s home folders.

Requirements

  • Home Folders should already be set up in your environment. In PaperCut, this attribute gets synced from your user directory and you can see it on the User Details page under “Home Directory”.
  • The PaperCut server should have write permissions to the user’s home folder. If the user’s home folder is hosted on a network share, you may need to configure PaperCut to run as a Service Account .

How to set up a Scan to Home Folder action

  1. Choose Devices, then Scan Actions, then Create New.
  2. Set the type of scan action as Folder.
  3. For the Path select User’s home folder.
  4. Select any other options as desired, then click Save & configure access.
  5. Finally test out your new Scan Action by logging into a device and completing the scan. For troubleshooting please refer to Troubleshooting PaperCut Integrated Scanning .

Customize the scan folder name

After following the above instructions, PaperCut MF will save the scanned documents to a folder called scans within the user’s Home Folder.

This folder name can be customized with the following config key - system.scan.home-sub-folder.

  1. Login to the PaperCut MF admin interface.
  2. Click Options > Config Editor.
  3. Search for the config key system.scan.home-sub-folder.
  4. Edit the value of the config key to specify the new folder name and click Update.
  5. Finally test out your new Scan Action by logging into a device and completing the scan.

Import user’s home folders from another field

By default, PaperCut MF imports user’s home folder information from the standard Home-Directory field in Active Directory. But what if users’ home directory paths are saved in a different attribute?

The solution is to set up PaperCut MF use the LDAP sync source, which does allow for customizing the path of the home directory.

  1. Login to the PaperCut MF admin interface.

  2. Select the Options section, then the User/Group Sync tab.

  3. Select the LDAP user source. For detailed instructions on LDAP setup see the manual .

  4. Apply the changes and perform a test to ensure your LDAP configuration is working as expected.

  5. Next, click Options > Config Editor.

  6. Search for the config key ldap.schema.home-directory-field.

  7. Edit the value of the config key to specify the new home folder attribute and click Update.
