During an upgrade, the installer fails to rename a file
Contents
The PaperCut installer is quite robust, however antivirus or similar low-level applications may prevent or delay access to file resources. This behaviour can cause errors, particularly when performing an over-the-top upgrade of a PaperCut installation.
In early 2013, PaperCut Technical Support diagnosed an issue with a customer’s installation that saw the PaperCut installer fail during an upgrade with the below error message:
An error occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory: MoveFile failed; code 183. Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
This can be caused by something on the system not allowing deletion of existing EXE files. We have found this to be caused by a number of possible factors:
- In some cases simply rebooting the server resolves this issue. Try this first.
- Virus or security scanners. Try disabling to see if this resolves the problem.
- Try enabling the Microsoft Service:
Application Experience
. It was found on some customers that if this service was “Disabled” it would result in this problem. Make sure this service “Startup Type” is set to “Manual” and then reboot the system.
