Why is Windows preventing me from installing PaperCut NG/MF, and what can I do about it?

THE PAGE APPLIES TO:

This article refers to installing the full PaperCut NG/MF server installation as opposed to the client software. If you’re from a school, college or university and are looking to find how to login to PaperCut NG/MF or how to install the PaperCut NG/MF client, you’ll need to contact your local IT Administrator department for assistance.

Windows Defender SmartScreen

Windows SmartScreen is a feature of the Windows 8/10/11 operating systems versions meant to provide anti-phishing and anti-malware protection. Typically, the operating system shows users warnings when attempting to install software that is deemed suspicious. It does this to prevent malware, viruses, and trojans from compromising Windows. If an installer or program has a low reputation decided by Windows, the operating system shows users warnings when attempting to install software.

Below is a screenshot of Windows Defender SmartScreen in action:

You may see this message when you download and run the PaperCut NG/MF, or Payment Gateway Module installers. This notification is shown by Windows due to PaperCut NG/MF’s recent introduction of a new software signing certificate that has yet to build up trust with Microsoft. This message is not a concern for the PaperCut NG/MF, or Payment Gateway Module installations.

Luckily, the workaround is simple. Click the More info link reveals a new option to Run anyway. We hope to establish a positive reputation quickly and for this message not to appear for installations in the future in Windows.
